Buildings of old Lahore
Pervaiz and Sajida Vandal of the National College of Arts, Lahore have documented the extraordinary contribution of Bhai Ram Singh to the architectural profile of Lahore which has some stately, imposing buildings. However, within the walled city, the surviving residential buildings, though in a state of disrepair, exhibit typical design features. Almost entirely in exposed brickwork, some of the buildings display the skills of craftsmen in creating exquisite designs and shapes out of ordinary bricks. Unfortunately, most of the buildings are being pulled down and replaced by mundane, matchbox like structures. In the absence of any incentives for conservation, a vital and visible part of the common heritage of joint Punjab will be lost.
